In February 2021 we carried out a consultation opportunity for parents to look at the new RSHE curriculum and policy to gather their views before the implementation of our new RSHE policy from April 2021. We received views from twenty eight parents which we used to help finalise our policy and curriculum.
See below for the results of our consultation and our responses.
At Heckmondwike Primary we have introduced a whole school PSHE scheme called Jigsaw. We have adapted the curriculum following our consultation process to make it fit for our community and our pupils.
Jigsaw combines PSHE, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development. Jigsaw aims to help children know and value who they really are and how they are related to other people in this ever-changing world.
There are six Puzzles (half-term units of work) each with six Pieces (lessons). Every year group studies the same Puzzle at the same time (sequentially ordered from September to July). This allows for whole school themes to be shared and celebrated across the school. Each year group is taught one lesson per week and all lessons are delivered in an age- and stage-appropriate way so that they meet children’s needs.
As a school community we have agreed that we will not be teaching Sex Education within our school curriculum. We will offer a parents access to resources and guidance to support remote learning of this topic within the home if requested. Please read our policy for full details of our curriculum.
Please see below for an overview of the curriculum content covered by Jigsaw.
Please note, the Changing Me jigsaw piece (series of lessons), is one of the aspects we have proposed to adapt in light of our consultation process so far. Our proposal is that we will not be teaching any aspects related to sex education as a whole class lesson, instead offering these resources for parents to use at home home with their children.
